Polypropylene

Polypropylene – is a thermoplastic polymer used in various fields of production. It is made by polymerization of propylene.

Available in the form of colorless or colored powdery granules.

Recyclable.

Polypropylene belongs to the class of polyolefins and is partially crystalline and non-polar. Its properties are similar to polyethylene, but it is slightly harder and more heat-resistant.

Polypropylene is a white, mechanically strong material with high chemical resistance.

Polypropylene is the second most widely produced commodity plastic and is often used for the production of packaging, containers and plastic utensils.

Polypropylene is very similar to polyethylene, especially in physical and chemical properties.

The density of polypropylene is from 0.895 to 0.92 g / cm3. Therefore, polypropylene is the marketable plastic with the lowest density. At a lower density, molded parts with a lower weight and a large number of parts can be made from a certain mass of plastic.

Polypropylene is usually strong and flexible, especially when copolymerized with ethylene. This allows the use of polypropylene as engineering plastic.

The ideal melting point of polypropylene is in the range from 160 to 171 ° C.

Polypropylene at room temperature is resistant to fats and almost all organic solvents, except for strong oxidizing agents. Non-oxidizing acids and bases can be stored in polypropylene containers.

The disadvantages of polypropylene can be called its low frost resistance and sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. The technical quality of plastic is enhanced by the introduction of appropriate stabilizers.

Polypropylene has different physical properties and applications:

Atactic – polypropylene, similar to rubber. Has a liquid or waxy shape due to softness, ductility and high melting point.

Construction materials, adhesives, primers, putties, and compounds for rubber compounds are made from such plastic.

Syndiotactic – polypropylene with high bending resistance and wear resistance. Used in the manufacture of consumer and medical goods.

Isotactic is the densest type of polypropylene. It is used for the production of polymer pipes for water supply.
